There’s a lot of excitement when the first ski mountain opens! The thought of getting back on snow, talking to friends you haven’t seen since last season, or the feeling of sore legs after the first day back. What keeps me coming back year after year is how different each season can be. One year we could have 3 feet of snow in December or it could be like last year (god forbid) and bring over 8 inches of rain in December.
I truly believe that Maine has some of the best skiing in the Northeast. You can’t beat Saddleback’s Casablanca Glades after a hefty snowstorm, or Sugarloaf’s wide-open cruisers on a bluebird day. The fireworks at Sunday River or the epic Moosehead Lake views at Big Moose Mountain. While I could talk for hours about each mountain and how it’s unique, I want to share some tips and techniques to get ready for the ski season. Your legs will thank me!
Get Active:
While doing something is better than nothing, going for walks or runs will help. I know that it gets dark VERY early now (why?) but set aside some time to get outside now. Going for a bike ride is a great way to start working your knees, almost simulating floating down the mountain.

Start With The Gear:
You can’t have fun if you’re cold. A good ski day starts ahead of time by picking out the best gear. We have created a great resource to snag gear for Beginners, Intermediates, and Experts alike. While the recommendations are the same, it’s packaged differently for each skill level as to not overwhelm them.

Shop Season Passes And Save:
If you haven’t purchased your pass yet, we’ve made it easier than ever to compare passes, see the current pricing, and prepare for the next deadline on our Season Passes page.
Keep doing those snow dances!
