RFID Gates: Everything you need to know
As most Maine ski resorts make the switch to use RFID technology, this can be confusing to some. We want to make sure you know everything you need to know before heading out onto the snow.

Is your pass not scanning?
If your pass isn’t scanning at the gates, ask yourself these questions.
- Is the pass on the left side of my body? The scanner is on the left side.
- Do I have more than just the RFID card in my pocket? Your RFID card will work best when it’s the only item in that pocket.
- Is the pass at chest level? The orange part is the scanner. (Pro tip: If your jacket has a pocket by the wrist, put it there. If not, you can keep it in your glove so you can adjust to all heights of scanners)
- Did you reload your pass online? Sometimes, when you reload the pass online, the system never activates the card, rendering it unable to scan. Make sure to see the ticket office or any guest services desk.
- Is your pass near your phone or credit card? The various frequencies being produced by those items can wipe all the information from your pass. It’s best to keep these separate.
- Do you have multiple passes in your pocket? When using single-day tickets or if you have passes to other mountains, make sure to take them out before trying to go through the RFID gates. The scanners will try and scan everything, saying your pass is invalid.
- What material is your jacket made out of? Some jackets are made of certain materials that reflect RFID scans, thus not scanning your pass.
- Are you a parent skiing with young children? Make sure each person has their pass in their pocket.
It is always best practice to see the Ticket Office or a Guest Services desk whenever you are having difficulties with your pass. They will be more than happy to check your card for you.
