The 44th Annual Logging Festival will be taking place in Rangeley Maine on July 11th and 12th. This year’s parade theme is “Forests From Around The World”. The parade will be on Saturday, July 12 and everyone is welcome to enter a float. To learn more, contact the Maine Forestry Museum’s Parade Coordinator, Linda Sikes at (207) 491-6566. Camden Snow Bowl have been working on a new master plan for the resort and surrounding area and a few weeks ago, they presented it to the town. In it, the mountain could be adding new mountain biking trails, a new lodge, and potentially a new lift better equiped for higher demand. Sugarloaf will once again be hosting the Summer Après Series on the Beach. The free concerts on the beach will be performed by the the following artists on the dates below.

Another week of summer is now behind us. With moderate temps all weekend long, it was great to get outside. Community Work Day:

There has been a lot of talk recently about the summit of Big Moose Mountain. The area, which hasn’t offered lift-serviced skiing since March of 2004, has been making waves in the ski community. Recently, the non-profit has completed servaying and testing of the area and have been rasing the funds to rebuild the summit ski patrol building. In a post to Facebook earlier this week, they teased something more than just a building but we’ll have to wait and see if they announce anything more on that subject. If you aren’t already excited to check out ‘Maine’s Newest Bike Park’, seeing their brand new trail map might change things for you. Recently, the resort posted the trail map ahead of their July 4 opening. Check it out and learn more about their bike park below.
Saddleback recently completed work on their South Branch Quad. This work was on the lift’s haul rope. A photo posted by one of their lift maintenance team members, Wilkins, showed the progress.
Sunday River Summer Kick Off:
Kick start summer at Sunday River with loads of events and fireworks on July 5. Join other skiers and riders from Sunday River for the unofficial start of the summer season at the resort. With live music, fireworks, scenic chairlift rides, and more! See the full schedule of events below.
Last week, Indy Pass released a new program where you can get a free Indy Pass by sporting some version of “IndyPass”, “SkiIndy”, or whatever else you can come up with on your license plate. The company says that for every year the plate reads that combo, you will be sent a free Indy Pass. To read more, click the link below.
‘New England’s Newest Mountain Bike Park’ will be opening in the Whiffletree Area on July 4th weekend. Lift tickets are as low as $25 for the whole day. The Sugarloaf Golf Club is continuing their early-season tradition of collecting canned food in exchange for discounted golf rounds during the annual Tin Mountain Round Up. This weekend, golfers can play 18 holes for just $49, with cart included, by donating three or more non-perishable food items to benefit local food banks. On Thursday, the mountain posted to Facebook asking for help. They are currently in the permitting process with LUPC to reconstruct the former Ski Patrol Cabin & training center at the top of the mountain. The goal is that this project will be a community build, ideally fall of this year. If this effort is something that you would like to be involved in, reach out to the non-profit. They are asking for help with engineering, design, materials, fundraising, and labor. They ended the post hinting at a new summit lift. Read the full post below.
A brand new sticker has just hit the shop with the release of the state’s new pine tree license plate. The new sticker matches our Chickadee Plate with “Skier” as the text. Pick one up today to match your new plate!
The Rangeley Birding Festival is a four-day event that is all about birds in and around the Rangeley area. Starting next weekend on Thursday, June 5 through Sunday, June 8. With signature events like lift rides up Saddleback’s Rangeley Express, A Paddle on the Kennebago River, and activities for all ages. Downeast Magazine’s Best of Maine 2025 voting is now open. Five ski mountains are on the list this year. Camden Snow Bowl, Mt. Abram, Saddleback, Sugarloaf, and Sunday River are all up for the title of Best Ski Mountain in Maine. While I won’t tell you which mountain I voted for, here are my other votes for the categories:

What was going to be the first summer since 2018 where no new lifts were getting installed in Maine, Titcomb has signed a contract with Doppelmayr to replace T-Bar 2 with a brand new one! Titcomb has been fundraising for a few months now trying to raise enough money to add 3-phase power to the mountain, improve snowmaking, and of course, replace T-Bars 1 and 2. Currently, Lift 2 is removed and production has started on the new lift. The mountain is continuing to fundraise with a hope that both lifts 1 and 2 could be replaced. On Monday, Big Moose Mountain posted to Facebook with some exciting updates. For starters, the non-profit received a check for $25,000 from the Gardner Family Trust. The mountain also posted about receiving a 2014 Prinoth BR350 groomer. They say this will help modernize their fleet and bring more reliability to the Greenville Mountain. The Lupine Festival will be happening on Saturday, June 14 from 10:00am-4:00pm at the Outdoor Heritage Museum. Located at 8 Rumford Road in Oquossoc, over 40 local Maine vendors will be there. The Museum and its store will also be open for visitors. Admission is free but access to the museum’s exhibits are $8.00 for adults and free for kids 12 and under. Learn more on their website below.
Mt. Abram has been hard at work getting their mountain bike trails and lifts ready to go. Unfortunately, their lifts need some work before they can load guests. This lift work has resulted in the bike park opening much later than anticipated with the opening date set for June 19. Learn more and purchase tickets below.

We saw some heat this past week! Warm temps and sunny skies carried us through a few days this week before going right back into this cold and rainy stage. Hopefully that will all be ending as Sunday starts the month of June!

Black Mountain in Rumford has been busy working inside, which was perfect given all of the recent rain, replacing their old flooring. They have been wripping out the carpet and will be replacing it with fresh, new stuff. See all of the photos on their Facebook page, linked below.
Saddleback is waking up from the Mud Season and gettign ready for Summer. The Pub is now open for the Summer Season. The Retail shop is also open. While the lift rides and mountain biking announcements will come later. Learn more on their website.
Sidecountry Sports is hosting a bike sale to benefit the trails at Camden Snow Bowl. Proceeds from the sale will be donated to Midcoast Trails Stewardship and earmarked to work directly with the Snow Bowl, and Camden Parks and Recreation Director Jeff Nathan to improve the trails at the Snow Bowl. All kinds of bikes are accepted — children’s, mountain, road, gravel and hybrids. Bikes must be in good working order to be accepted for the sale. Sidecountry is accepting bikes at its Rockland location, at 481 Main Street, from 10 a.m.-6 p.m., and at it Trailside location at the Camden Snow Bowl on Thursday, May 22, and Friday, May 23 from 3 to 7 p.m. See the article below.

The NSAA’s 2025 Safety Awards happned this week and one exciting announcement has come from the big convention: BigRock Mountain has won ‘Best Guest Safety Program’! The mountain won thanks to their innovative Ski4Life button program. The way it works is that wearing a green button shows that you are a complete beginner. A blue button states you are comfortable with skiing and riding to the triple chair. Finally, a black button states that you are fully able to go to the summit and that you are a strong intermediate skier. May 23 and there’s a fresh dusting of snow at the top of Saddleback and Sugarloaf.
What in the world? Winter isn’t done yet! Most high elevation areas saw a fresh dusting of SNOW *checks calendar* IN LATE MAY! This all happened yesterday and overnight last night.

After all those cold temperatures, apparently cold enough to snow, we will have just a few more days of this before Mother Nature will kindly give us some warmth and sunshine… even if it’s only short lived. Monday, Memorial Day looks nice! After all this rain and cold temperatures, I’m more than ready for warm days filled with LOTS of sunshine.

Titcomb WILL Install A New T-Bar:
What was going to be the first summer since 2018 where no new lifts were getting installed in Maine, Titcomb has signed a contract with Doppelmayr to replace T-Bar 2 with a brand new one! Titcomb has been fundraising for a few months now trying to raise enough money to add 3-phase power to the mountain, improve snowmaking, and of course, replace T-Bars 1 and 2. Currently, Lift 2 is removed and production has started on the new lift. The mountain is continuing to fundraise with a hope that both lifts 1 and 2 could be replaced. The Sugarloaf Marathon, a Boston Marathon qualifier, draws global runners to scenic Western Maine. Taking place on Sunday, May 11, and certified by USATF, it’s one of the nation’s fastest courses, with a 1,500-runner limit. Learn more below.

Sunday River Golf Course recently started taking tee times for the upcoming golf season. The course has a tentative opening date of Friday, May 16 where they will be open ‘fore’ the weekend then closing Mon-Thurs and reopening for the season the following weekend. Explore the course and book your next gorgeous, yet challenging round below.
Skiing isn’t the only thing that puts Mt. Abram on the map. During the summer months, skis are swapped for mountain bikes and snow pants for knee pads. While the bike park hasn’t officially opened for the season as it’s too muddy and crews are working to bring the trails back to life, they did recently release a brand new trail map. The goal was to make the map more user friendly and more accurately reflect the riding experience at Mt. Abram. See the full map and learn more about their park by clicking the link below.
The course recently started taking tee times for the 2025 season. With a target opening day of May 23, don’t miss the incredible early-season deals and savings! See the deals below.
Black Mountain of Maine’s board of directors presents the annual golf tournament at Oakdale Country Club. This 18 hole, 4 ball scramble is on June 14th with an 8:00am registration & 9:00am start. Lunch will be at 2:00pm & is included with the registration fee. The deadline to register is May 28th. Learn more below.
Before the non-profit can replace the summit lift or the top patrol shack, they must first work to learn more about the puddle at the top. This vernal pool is impacting getting permits from LUPC (Land Use Planning Commission). The mountain recently posted to Facebook asking if anyone is willing to help with their 2,938′ challenge, to reach out to them. The NSAA’s 2025 Safety Awards have just been released and BigRock Mountain in Mars Hill is a finalist for “Best Guest Safety Program”. The mountain has some competition as it was next to Boreal Mountain in CA, and Shawnee Mountain Ski Area in PA. We’re rooting for BigRock! See the full list below.
The Rangeley Birding Festival is a four-day event that is all about birds in and around the Rangeley area. With signature events like lift rides up Saddleback’s Rangeley Express, A Paddle on the Kennebago River, and activites for all ages. The Lupine Festival will be happening on Saturday, June 14 from 10:00am-4:00pm at the Outdoor Heritage Museum. Located at 8 Rumford Road in Oquossoc, over 40 local Maine vendors will be there. The Museum and its store will also be open for visitors. Admission is free but access to the museum’s exibits are $8.00 for adults and free for kids 12 and under. Learn more on their webiste below.
This two-day, 40-mile paddling event is part of the Maine High Peaks PaddleFest and goes from June 21 to June 22. For more information and to register, click the link below.
The 44th Annual Logging Festival will be taking place in Rangeley Maine on July 11th and 12th. This year’s parade theme is “Forests From Around The World”. The snow hasn’t even melted all the way and the crew at Big Moose has already started work on their Triple Chairlift. The team was working to replace the top bullwheel bearings, a new liner, and also some NDT testing for cracks and wear spots. With lots of rain this week, we are in the heart of Mud Season. We are looking at some sun with warm temps early next week which will hopefully dry things out. I don’t know about you, but I am itching to get back outside with good weather!

The 3rd. Annual Hill Climb at Saddleback has recently opened for registration, so be as quick as a ski bunny and register! The Hill Climb is on Friday & Saturday, April 19-20, 2024. This event grows every year and brings in smiling faces from all over New England. It is definitely something you do not want to miss! Learn more below!

This week, Pleasant Mountain announced The Summit Express. After 86 years, the mountain will finally add a high-speed, detachable quad to their lift lineup. The lift, which is a Doppelmayr refurbished High-Speed Quad, will take skiers and riders up to the top in under 5 minutes. The lift came from Sunday River’s Jordan Express lift and will be installed this summer.

BigRock Mountain in Mars Hill will be installing a brand new Doppelmayr Quad this summer. The new lift, which will have the same name as the double that currently sits in its place, will be called Gemini. BigRock started fundraising for the project back in 2021 but has secured enough for the payment to Doppelmayr. The surveying took place last summer, and construction is expected to start in the spring.

As Saddleback’s last chair was sent up the Rangeley Quad on Sunday, that left two ski resorts left: Sugarloaf and Sunday River. As part of their spring operating hours, they were closed Tuesday through Friday but will reopen this weekend. See the resort status for all the important information!

Reggae Fest at Sugarloaf:
Join Sugarloaf for the 36th Annual Sugarloaf Reggae Festival, presented by Baxter Outdoors, on April 11-14, 2024. Prepare yourself for four days of music and non-stop parties at the base of Sugarloaf Mountain with two amazing headliners: John Brown’s Body and Long Beach Dub All Stars. The biggest party on the East Coast consists of two nights of music in the King Pine room, two days of outside entertainment on The Beach, three nights of music in The Widowmaker, reggae DJs at Bullwinkle’s, and more. The Pond-A-Pooloza is happening once again this year on Saturday, April 13. Registration is free, but to secure a spot, head to the Welcome Center at South Ridge Lodge between 9 a.m. and 10:30 a.m. to sign the dotted line and get your bib number. Costumes weigh heavy on your score, so come suited up in anything but a wet suit (unless you’re a wimp)! Prizes will be awarded to the top 3 overall scores, plus best costume and biggest splash! This past week we said farwell to Pleasant Mountain as they ended their season on Monday, April 8. Side note – for those who got to see the eclipse… WOW! On the bright side, when we return to the Bridgton Mountain next ski season, the skier experience will be totally different thanks to the high-speed quad they are installing in the off season.

While the snow from earlier in the week was a nice boost, the rain we’ve gotten off and on since Wednesday has definitely hurt morale. I don’t expect the mountains to be affected that much by the rain, just be aware for spring conditions. Check the mountain lift status page before heading up to the mountain, linked below.

Announced earlier this week, Camden Snow Bowl in Camden, Maine has closed for the season. With warm weather and all the rain, they had trouble getting and keeping their snowpack. See the status of your local resort by clicking the link below.

Total Solar Eclipse:
The Total Solar Eclipse will come through Maine on Monday, April 8th, 2024. It looks like BigRock Mountain and Big Moose Mountain will be right in the middle of the path. Saddleback and Sugarloaf will get some time in the darkness as well. As we get closer to April, we will start sharing some events coming from these mountains.

What a discouraging week for Maine ski areas. Both Big Moose Mountain and Camden Snow Bowl have closed. All week, we saw rain and temps in the mid 40’s. March should be the snowiest month of the year but for some reason we’ve been hit with horrible conditions all season.

I wish I could give you better news with the forecast, but sadly, it’s more of the same. I bet you can’t guess what’s coming our way Sunday and Monday… On the bright side, some snow will accumulate during the morning on Sunday, so let’s all hope it sticks! On Tuesday, Sunday River sent the first chair of the 2023-24 ski season up the hill on their Jordan 8 lift, and this morning, Sugarloaf did the same with their SuperQuad lift. It might only be fall but the folks from Sunday River are already in the winter mindset. This week, the mountain announced a new early-season operating guide. The plan is to start the season off with top-to-bottom skiing and riding off their Jordan 8 lift. They hope to have “multiple trail choices” serviced from the Jordan 8. The newest major lift progress at Sugarloaf since the SuperQuad all the way back in 1994, the new Bucksaw Express will take skiers and riders to the top of West Mountain by the on-mountain Bullwinkles Grill. The lift will stretch 6,574 feet long and feature a 1,433-foot vertical rise. It will also be the future home to over 200 new homes including 52 single-family house lots.
The expansion will shorten the existing West Mountain Double Chair to the mid-station to relieve congestion at the top unload area. Set to debut in late December – early January with 12 trails:

Sugarloaf posted a video to Facebook showcasing the project and Sugarloaf’s continued investment to their mountain. They’re adding 246 high-efficiency HKD snow guns and over 88,000′ of new snowmaking pipe. Check out the full video below along with the 2030 plan.
Sunday River is making quick work on their newest project, a new, high-speed, detachable 6 person lift – Barker 6. This new lift is manufactured by the world’s leading lift manufacturer, Doppelmayr, and is set to be completed by the 2023-24 ski season. This lift will be pretty much identical to the Jordan 8 by featuring heated, ergonomic seats, individual head & foot rests, weather-proof Sunday River Red bubble covers, automatically lowering and locking restraining bar, 13 towers with 63 chairs, and a ride time of just under 5 minutes. This new lift will be a game changer for the Barker area and for Sunday River as a whole.
As well as the Barker 6, Sunday River is installing their second triple chair on Merrill Hill. The new triple chair will provide more opportunities for ski-in, ski-out homes on Merrill Hill. This lift is the second Doppelmayr lift getting installed at the River. While this lift wasn’t in the public eye as much as Barker 6 until this week, the two lifts should be complete when the snow flies. We saw the start to the 2023-24 ski season this week as Sunday River opened this Tuesday and Sugarloaf sent their first chair up the SuperQuad this morning at 8:30. Here we go! Think cold temps and snow.
Weather:
While we might be skiing, the temps suggest otherwise. On the bright side, the warm temps will allow the tired snowmakers to get some much needed rest, before returning to the hills next week.
