Thanks to Mother Nature, most resorts saw upwards of 12 inches of fresh snow this week! The cold temps that came rolling in right after that new snow brought great snowmaking weather.

We’re looking at a cold weekend ahead. If you’re headed out for some Christmas Vacation turns, please bundle up. Those temps might not look bad, but with the wind chill, it only gets colder. Check on the little ones often and take breaks to prevent frostbite.

Well Mainely Skiers, with five mountains to choose from by Saturday, I figured I should leave it short and sweet this week so you have all the time you need to get your gear prepped for the season.

Snowmaking temps continued throughout the week, allowing the resorts to open with lots of trails, and the resorts already open able to expand quickly.

    Weather:

This weekend will be a chilly one, so make sure you have good base layers. The lows will dip to around -7, with the wind chill making it feel even lower. Make sure you don’t have exposed skin, take breaks, and look out for little ones as frost bite could happen in these temperatures. For those planning some weekday skiing, you will also want to bundle up as next week, temps drop.

Snowmaking continued through the early parts of the week, but came to a screeching halt when temps that were closer to 50 degrees came to town. Thankfully, we’re watching it briefly return to normal this weekend.

    Weather:

Briefly is the big name this weekend. Look at those forecasted temps. We’re looking forward to a nice little dip in the weather, which will allow the snowmakers to get back out… but briefly. It’s looking like we’ll have another warmup starting Sunday night and continuing throughout the early part of next week.

  • Mainely Skiing Weekly Email (October 24, 2025)

Welcome to the Mainely Skiing Fall Email! This email will be sent straight to your inbox whenever we release new emails. In this email, we will highlight all the fall activities in or around the mountains of Maine!

    When Is Maine Snowmaking:

With all the photos coming out of the west coast, lots of people have been asking me, “Keegan, when is my mountain going to start snowmaking?” While I can’t read the minds of all the resorts, I can give you some things to look at.

    1. Keep an eye on the weather
While this sounds really obvious, I’m including it because it’s important to check what the forecast looks like. A consistently cold upcoming forecast could be all the mountains need to get the guns fired up.

    2. Use the resorts webcams
The resorts share their live webcams. Often times with multiple views of the mountain. If you can’t see any snowmaking machines, chances are, we are further away than we want to admit.

    3. Killington
Yeah, I know Killington is in Vermont but they are typically the first in New England to start snowmaking, only rarely loosing that title to Sunday River. Once Killington starts making snow, and they have their HKD’s all lined up on the North Ridge camera, it won’t be long for Maine ski areas.

    4. Our Resort Status Page
Keep tabs on our Resort Status page as we have most of the opening dates announced, as well as a way to see snowmaking. While the page is only updated every hour, it’s still a very good resource for keeping track of all the mountains on one page.

    5. Facebook
Resorts are very excited to share when they start snowmaking. Often times posting photos, even videos of the crews working hard to cover the mountain in the white gold we love. This is a perfect place to check if your mountain is making snow.

    Hermon Mountain Could Close:

On a post made to Facebook earlier last week, they announced that if they can’t find a buyer, this season will be their final season operating the mountain. This mountain, closest to Maine’s third largest city, Bangor, showed 14 month-old me what it’s like to ski. This would be a tremendous loss to the Maine ski industry as smaller mountains like Hermon get young people on the snow for the first time. The easier terrain and perfect location show thousands what its like to ski or snowboard, eventually trying their skills at the larger resorts across the state. Read the full post below.

The Maine Foliage Report brought to you by MaineFoliage.com

(AUGUSTA, Maine) – The Department of Agriculture, Conservation and Forestry (DACF) has released its final foliage report for the season, indicating peak and past-peak conditions throughout most of Maine. As the weekend approaches, central and coastal areas are nearing peak color, with leaf drop now ranging from 70-100 percent.

    This Week’s Foliage Outlook

“This is ‘Maine’s weekend,” said Gale Ross, Maine’s fall foliage spokesperson. With the holiday traffic behind us, it’s the perfect time to take a leisurely scenic drive, hike, or bike ride and enjoy the colors with fewer crowds. Even past peak remains beautifully colorful and photo-worthy. As Vacationland prepares to put the trees to bed and we wrap up another fall foliage season, let’s thank all of the leaf lovers and everyone who celebrates Maine in the fall. There is still time to enjoy fall-inspired events and activities this upcoming weekend.

    Maine Foliage Report:

The Maine Foliage Report brought to you by MaineFoliage.com

(AUGUSTA, Maine) – With the first signs of autumn arriving in Maine, the Maine Department of Agriculture, Conservation and Forestry (DACF) is pleased to announce the official start of the 2025 foliage season, tracked and reported by DACF Fall Foliage Spokesperson Gale Ross.

    This Week’s Foliage Outlook

Northern Maine (zones 6 and 7) typically peaks in late September through early October. Central and western Maine follow around Indigenous Peoples’ Day, with coastal and southern regions reaching peak conditions in mid-to-late October.

“Although this summer’s drought may temper vibrancy and shorten the season in some areas, Maine will still deliver beautiful color statewide. Weather in the coming weeks will play the biggest role, as cool nights, warm sunny days, and shorter daylight drive the color change,” said Ross.

Sugarloaf has had a busy summer. With work being done all throughout the mountain. Crews have been hard at work replacing the haul rope for the SuperQuad. While some speculate this work is being done because there won’t be a replacement anytime soon, the real answer is that a haul rope has a lifespan and the cable is at the end of it’s safe timeline. Snowmaking has also been busy working on upgrading the main lines to 20″ pipes, they added a fourth booster pump at the mid-mountain pump house, and adding new snowmaking lines of some other trails.
