Sugarloaf’s Busy Summer:
Sugarloaf has had a busy summer. With work being done all throughout the mountain. Crews have been hard at work replacing the haul rope for the SuperQuad. While some speculate this work is being done because there won’t be a replacement anytime soon, the real answer is that a haul rope has a lifespan and the cable is at the end of it’s safe timeline. Snowmaking has also been busy working on upgrading the main lines to 20″ pipes, they added a fourth booster pump at the mid-mountain pump house, and adding new snowmaking lines of some other trails. Big Moose Mountain in Greenville has been very busy these last few days. Crews have been hard at work trimming the upper mountain trails. You can help donate to this great cause by using the link below.
Sugarloaf will once again be hosting the Summer Après Series on the Beach. The free concerts on the beach will be performed by the the following artists on the dates below.

Snowmaking Improvements at Black:
Black Mountain has been working hard to install new snowmaking equipment this summer. The mountain has purchased 5 new mobile SMI fan guns and 10 tower-mounted SMI guns. On a recent post to Facebook, the non-profit ski area showed all 10 tower guns are now installed along the St. John and Allagash trails. Check out the video below
The Mt. Abram Ski Club has recently been awarded a $5,000 grant to help local youth with scholarships for winter snow sports. The grant, which is from the Northern Forest Center, has $70,000 to help over 20 local initiatives across Maine, New Hampshire, Vermont, and New York. Read more below.
Sugarloaf just announced their new Snowcross Mountain Homes. The location is off the West Mountain expansion near the West Mountain Double and West Mountain Crosscut Trail. Learn more about this exciting new development below.
This past week, we saw a big win for the Non-Profit Greenville Mountain. Both US Senators, King and Collins, announced $500,000 for the ski area. Read the full article below:
You can vote or suggest new names for Titcomb Mountain’s new T-Bar. As of writing this, the top two names in the running are “Sandy River Speeder” and “Forster’s Flyer”. Cast your vote or suggest a new name below.
Enjoy the dark sky of the Rangeley Lakes area atop Quill Hill. Drive to the summit for an unforgettable experience. The event takes place on Wednesday, August 13. Learn more and sign up below.
Take a trip down memory lane at Oquossoc Day – Saturday, August 16th! The Fabulous ’50s is the Oquossoc Day theme for 2025 and offers fun for all ages. This all-day event kicks off at 10 a.m. in downtown Oquossoc. Oquossoc Day is made possible by the generosity and community spirit of Oquossoc businesses and friends of Oquossoc. Learn more below.
The trail that has been making headlines recently is now open for riders. Sugarloaf Bike Park’s Syncline, their long, flowing, easy trail is now open. This first section connects to a new stretch of Emerald, just above the bottom of Boulder Dash, and features a fun boulder option along with two beginner-friendly rollers and jumps. While Syncline will eventually offer a top-to-bottom beginner green circle trail experience, the whole route is still under construction and expected to open in full in September. Keep an eye out for updates! Go break in that new trail!

Another steller week here in the Maine mountains. Warm temps and sunny skies kicked off our week with great conditions to get out on the course, trails, lakes, or anything else you and your family enjoy during the warm, summer months.

If you didn’t have a calendar, you would think it was a week in mid September. What a gorgous week to be in the Maine mountains. Sun was out, temps were mild, and the fall-like weather was creeping in to let us know that it’s coming. Good thing is that it’s only July and we still have plenty of summer-weather left.

There has been a lot of talk recently about the summit of Big Moose Mountain. The area, which hasn’t offered lift-serviced skiing since March of 2004, has been making waves in the ski community. Recently, the non-profit has completed servaying and testing of the area and have been rasing the funds to rebuild the summit ski patrol building. In a post to Facebook earlier this week, they teased something more than just a building but we’ll have to wait and see if they announce anything more on that subject. If you aren’t already excited to check out ‘Maine’s Newest Bike Park’, seeing their brand new trail map might change things for you. Recently, the resort posted the trail map ahead of their July 4 opening. Check it out and learn more about their bike park below.
Saddleback recently completed work on their South Branch Quad. This work was on the lift’s haul rope. A photo posted by one of their lift maintenance team members, Wilkins, showed the progress.

Gosh! Last weekend was amazing: no rain, warm temps, and endless sunshine. While today looks a little rough, the luminous glow of sunshine on Saturday will make it all worth it!

Rangeley Birding Festival:
The Rangeley Birding Festival is a four-day event that is all about birds in and around the Rangeley area. Starting next weekend on Thursday, June 5 through Sunday, June 8. With signature events like lift rides up Saddleback’s Rangeley Express, A Paddle on the Kennebago River, and activities for all ages. Purchase tickets on their website below and see the full event schedule there.
Downeast Magazine’s Best of Maine 2025 voting is now open. Five ski mountains are on the list this year. Camden Snow Bowl, Mt. Abram, Saddleback, Sugarloaf, and Sunday River are all up for the title of Best Ski Mountain in Maine. While I won’t tell you which mountain I voted for, here are my other votes for the categories:

The Saddleback Bike Park will be opening their trails to pedal power only next Friday, June 13th. While the South Branch Quad isn’t slated to open until July 3, the trails are ready to rip. Check out the map and purchase tickets using the link below.
The Lupine Festival will be happening on Saturday, June 14 from 10:00am-4:00pm at the Outdoor Heritage Museum. Located at 8 Rumford Road in Oquossoc, over 40 local Maine vendors will be there. The Museum and its store will also be open for visitors. Admission is free but access to the museum’s exhibits are $8.00 for adults and free for kids 12 and under. Learn more on their website below.

Mt. Abram has been hard at work getting their mountain bike trails and lifts ready to go. Unfortunately, their lifts need some work before they can load guests. This lift work has resulted in the bike park opening much later than anticipated with the opening date set for June 19. Learn more and purchase tickets below.
On Monday, Big Moose Mountain attended the Town of Greenville’s meeting where they received a $50,000 pledge toward the acquisition of the ski resort property, thanks to a strong showing of support. On Tuesday, the Watt Family and the Indian Hill Trading Post put up a matching $50,000 pledge toward the mission. The non-profit is looking good right now but there is still lots to go! I wasn’t complaining about those warm temps we saw in the later part of this week. The sunshine was a welcome change from what has become the normal of clouds, rain, and cold weather.

We’re looking at a little bit of a cool down compared to the recent temperatures. Although this brings it back to normal temps this time of year, the rain isn’t looking good. Take today or Sunday and get out, swing a club, explore the birds, or hit any of your favorite hiking trails.

On Thursday, the mountain posted to Facebook asking for help. They are currently in the permitting process with LUPC to reconstruct the former Ski Patrol Cabin & training center at the top of the mountain. The goal is that this project will be a community build, ideally fall of this year. If this effort is something that you would like to be involved in, reach out to the non-profit. They are asking for help with engineering, design, materials, fundraising, and labor. They ended the post hinting at a new summit lift. Read the full post below.
The Sugarloaf Golf Club will continue it’s early-season tradition of collecting canned food in exchange for discounted golf rounds during the annual Tin Mountain Round Up, next weekend. Black Mountain in Rumford has been busy working inside, which was perfect given all of the recent rain, replacing their old flooring. They have been wripping out the carpet and will be replacing it with fresh, new stuff. See all of the photos on their Facebook page, linked below.
Saddleback is waking up from the Mud Season and gettign ready for Summer. The Pub is now open for the Summer Season. The Retail shop is also open. While the lift rides and mountain biking announcements will come later. Learn more on their website.
Sidecountry Sports is hosting a bike sale to benefit the trails at Camden Snow Bowl. Proceeds from the sale will be donated to Midcoast Trails Stewardship and earmarked to work directly with the Snow Bowl, and Camden Parks and Recreation Director Jeff Nathan to improve the trails at the Snow Bowl. All kinds of bikes are accepted — children’s, mountain, road, gravel and hybrids. Bikes must be in good working order to be accepted for the sale. Sidecountry is accepting bikes at its Rockland location, at 481 Main Street, from 10 a.m.-6 p.m., and at it Trailside location at the Camden Snow Bowl on Thursday, May 22, and Friday, May 23 from 3 to 7 p.m. See the article below.
The Rangeley Birding Festival is a four-day event that is all about birds in and around the Rangeley area. Starting on Thursday, June 5 through Sunday, June 8. With signature events like lift rides up Saddleback’s Rangeley Express, A Paddle on the Kennebago River, and activites for all ages. Downeast Magazine’s Best of Maine 2025 voting is now open. Five ski mountains are on the list this year. Camden Snow Bowl, Mt. Abram, Saddleback, Sugarloaf, and Sunday River are all up for the title of Best Ski Mountain in Maine. While I won’t tell you which mountain I voted for, here are my other votes for the categories:

What was going to be the first summer since 2018 where no new lifts were getting installed in Maine, Titcomb has signed a contract with Doppelmayr to replace T-Bar 2 with a brand new one! Titcomb has been fundraising for a few months now trying to raise enough money to add 3-phase power to the mountain, improve snowmaking, and of course, replace T-Bars 1 and 2. Currently, Lift 2 is removed and production has started on the new lift. The mountain is continuing to fundraise with a hope that both lifts 1 and 2 could be replaced. The NSAA’s 2025 Safety Awards happned this week and one exciting announcement has come from the big convention: BigRock Mountain has won ‘Best Guest Safety Program’! The mountain won thanks to their innovative Ski4Life button program. The way it works is that wearing a green button shows that you are a complete beginner. A blue button states you are comfortable with skiing and riding to the triple chair. Finally, a black button states that you are fully able to go to the summit and that you are a strong intermediate skier. On Monday, Big Moose Mountain posted to Facebook with some exciting updates. For starters, the non-profit recieved a check for $25,000 from the Gardner Family Trust. The mountain also posted about recieving a 2014 Prinoth BR350 groomer. They say this will help modernize their fleet and bring more reliability to the Greenville Mountain. The Lupine Festival will be happening on Saturday, June 14 from 10:00am-4:00pm at the Outdoor Heritage Museum. Located at 8 Rumford Road in Oquossoc, over 40 local Maine vendors will be there. The Museum and its store will also be open for visitors. Admission is free but access to the museum’s exibits are $8.00 for adults and free for kids 12 and under. Learn more on their webiste below.

What in the world? Winter isn’t done yet! Most high elevation areas saw a fresh dusting of SNOW *checks calendar* IN LATE MAY! This all happened yesterday and overnight last night.

After all those cold temperatures, apparently cold enough to snow, we will have just a few more days of this before Mother Nature will kindly give us some warmth and sunshine… even if it’s only short lived. Monday, Memorial Day looks nice! After all this rain and cold temperatures, I’m more than ready for warm days filled with LOTS of sunshine.

Before the non-profit can replace the summit lift or the top patrol shack, they must first work to learn more about the puddle at the top. This vernal pool is impacting getting permits from LUPC (Land Use Planning Commission). Going Up Is Getting Faster:
This week, Pleasant Mountain announced The Summit Express. After 86 years, the mountain will finally add a high-speed, detachable quad to their lift lineup. The lift, which is a Doppelmayr refurbished High-Speed Quad, will take skiers and riders up to the top in under 5 minutes. The lift came from Sunday River’s Jordan Express lift and will be installed this summer.

Saddleback will host their second annual Back To The Banks, a banked slalom event on Lower Grey Ghost on Saturday, March 16. Please note, this event is only open to snowboarders or people who use snow skates. For more information and to sign up, click the link below!
The 3rd. Annual Hill Climb at Saddleback has recently opened for registration, so be as quick as a ski bunny and register! The Hill Climb is on Friday & Saturday, April 19-20, 2024. This event grows every year and brings in smiling faces from all over New England. It is definitely something you do not want to miss! Learn more below!
BigRock Mountain in Mars Hill will be installing a brand new Doppelmayr Quad this summer. The new lift, which will have the same name as the double that currently sits in its place, will be called Gemini. BigRock started fundraising for the project back in 2021 but has secured enough for the payment to Doppelmayr. The surveying took place last summer, and construction is expected to start in the spring.

Total Solar Eclipse:
The Total Solar Eclipse will come through Maine on Monday, April 8th, 2024. It looks like BigRock Mountain and Big Moose Mountain will be right in the middle of the path. Saddleback and Sugarloaf will get some time in the darkness as well. As we get closer to April, we will start sharing some events coming from these mountains.

What an amazing week to be a skier in Maine. Sure, the beginning brought some questionable weather our way, but it turned into a wonderful week of corn skiing. I hope the mashed potatoes continue into the weekend!

Happy Groundhog Day, Mainely Skiers! Punxsutawney Phil didn’t see his shadow which means we’ll have an early spring. That’s good news to us as who doesn’t love t-shirt skiing and sunny chairlift rides? While we will need to get to spring first, we’re looking ahead to the annual end-of-season parties.
Sugarloaf’s Fire On The Mountain, this annual music-loving event is happening today through Sunday. With a packed lineup of bands and festivities, make sure to head over to Sugarloaf with your dancing shoes and get ready for a great weekend. Learn more about this event by clicking the link below!
Remember, as February Break approaches, make sure we are stocking up on gear for dress-up days at Saddleback; we want to look our very best going down our favorite trails! Sugarloaf is also hosting their February Fireworks at the end of the break on the 23rd! The 3rd. Annual Hill Climb at Saddleback has recently opened for registration, so be as quick as a ski bunny and register! The Hill Climb is on Friday & Saturday, April 19-20, 2024. This event grows every year and brings in smiling faces from all over New England. It is definitely something you do not want to miss! Learn more below!
