We’ve been on a temperature roller coaster recently. One day it appears to be go-time for snowmakers and then the next we’re sitting inside, watching the rain and wind against our windows with the thermometer showing 51°. I’m just wondering when we can get off this ride and finally enter the ride of winter.

    Weather:

Sugarloaf and Sunday River were making snow yesterday but the incoming warmth will throw a wrench into those plans. We’re hoping they see what we see for next week! Light snow might be found in the mountains tonight but will quickly change to rain, washing all of it away. Even at elevation, the temps being in the mid 40’s could make it all disappear.

Welcome to the Mainely Skiing Fall Email! This email will be sent straight to your inbox whenever we release new emails. In this email, we will highlight all the fall activities in or around the mountains of Maine!

    Happy Halloween, Mainely Skiers!

When trick or treating later tonight, make sure to walk on sidewalks or paths at all times. If there are no sidewalks, walk facing traffic as far to the left as possible. Watch for cars that are turning or backing up. Never dart out into the street or cross between parked cars. Decorate costumes and bags with reflective tape or stickers and, if possible, choose light colored costumes.

If going door-to-door isn’t your style, make sure to watch for kids. Drive slowly and take extra time to look for kids at intersections. Enter and exit driveways slowly and carefully. Get rid of any distractions, like your phone, so you can concentrate on the road and your surroundings. Turn your headlights on earlier in the day to spot children from greater distances. Popular trick-or-treating hours are 4:30pm. to 9:30pm but be aware all day long.

Surprisingly, that early-season snowfall has been holding on nicely at the summits of Sugarloaf and Saddleback. The incoming rain, however, might wash it away. All eyes are now on the first week of November! Start to do those snow dances, and I guess add cold weather dances to your routine as well.

    Weather:

If you’re headed out to trick or treat tonight, make sure to add an umbrella to your costume as it will be wet out there! Make sure you’re wearing reflective objects as the rain will make it next to impossible to see people on the roads.

We’re looking at some cold temperatures this weekend and Killington has already shared they are anticipating to fire up a record-breaking 196 snow guns. It is possible that we see either Sugarloaf or Sunday River fire up, even if it’s just for a short time. If they don’t end up making snow, don’t worry as after the short hiccup next Monday and Tuesday, the lows will be perfect for peak performance.

    Day:Friday:Saturday: Sunday:
    High:53°   39° 40°
    Low:39° 34° 31°

Stay safe out there, trick or treaters!

  • Mainely Skiing Weekly Email (October 24, 2025)

Welcome to the Mainely Skiing Fall Email! This email will be sent straight to your inbox whenever we release new emails. In this email, we will highlight all the fall activities in or around the mountains of Maine!

    When Is Maine Snowmaking:

With all the photos coming out of the west coast, lots of people have been asking me, “Keegan, when is my mountain going to start snowmaking?” While I can’t read the minds of all the resorts, I can give you some things to look at.

    1. Keep an eye on the weather
While this sounds really obvious, I’m including it because it’s important to check what the forecast looks like. A consistently cold upcoming forecast could be all the mountains need to get the guns fired up.

    2. Use the resorts webcams
The resorts share their live webcams. Often times with multiple views of the mountain. If you can’t see any snowmaking machines, chances are, we are further away than we want to admit.

    3. Killington
Yeah, I know Killington is in Vermont but they are typically the first in New England to start snowmaking, only rarely loosing that title to Sunday River. Once Killington starts making snow, and they have their HKD’s all lined up on the North Ridge camera, it won’t be long for Maine ski areas.

    4. Our Resort Status Page
Keep tabs on our Resort Status page as we have most of the opening dates announced, as well as a way to see snowmaking. While the page is only updated every hour, it’s still a very good resource for keeping track of all the mountains on one page.

    5. Facebook
Resorts are very excited to share when they start snowmaking. Often times posting photos, even videos of the crews working hard to cover the mountain in the white gold we love. This is a perfect place to check if your mountain is making snow.

    Hermon Mountain Could Close:

On a post made to Facebook earlier last week, they announced that if they can’t find a buyer, this season will be their final season operating the mountain. This mountain, closest to Maine’s third largest city, Bangor, showed 14 month-old me what it’s like to ski. This would be a tremendous loss to the Maine ski industry as smaller mountains like Hermon get young people on the snow for the first time. The easier terrain and perfect location show thousands what its like to ski or snowboard, eventually trying their skills at the larger resorts across the state. Read the full post below.

    Statewide Lift Construction:

Across the state, there are three mountains that are installing chairlifts. Pleasant Mountain is installing a refurbished Doppelmayr High-Speed Quad, BigRock Mountain is installing a new Doppelmayr Quad, and Lost Valley is installing a used Hall Double Chair.

Please Note: Due to lift construction, hiking at Pleasant Mountain is currently prohibited.

    Pleasant Mountain:

    As of Wed, May 22

On Wednesday, Pleasant Mountain posted a video to their Instagram account showing them blowing up part of the Jack Spratt trail to make way for a road so Doppelmayr can safely transport components of the new lift to the summit station.

    BigRock Mountain:

    As of Mon, April 1

Since receiving the delivery of chairs and cushions on April 1, the mountain hasn’t posted any new information surrounding the new lift.

    Lost Valley:

    As of Wed, May 1

On Wednesday, Lost Valley posted some pictures of progress as well as a video that explained what’s happening. Currently, crews are working to remove the existing bearings to replace them before building the lift. This will help maintenance as bearings typically last 7-10 years.
