    Opening Day at Saddleback:

    It’s tomorrow! Saddleback Mountain opens on December 10! Crews are working around the clock to make sure we have a solid opening and a long season. Lift Maintenance strung the haul rope this week, and snowmakers have been blowing that beautiful white stuff we all love whenever temps allow. Plus, various updates around the resort:

    • Retail – Moved back to the original location (Open Friday – Sunday, 11:00am-4:00pm)
    • 15% Off Early Season Lodging – Use code MtnHolly at checkout. *Participating properties only.
    • Rental Shop – Open for pre-season tune-ups and binding checks (Open Midweek 8:00am – 4:00pm and on the weekend from 9:00am – 4:00pm)

    Sugarloaf Holiday Gift Bazaar:

    The Sugarloaf Holiday Bazaar will be taking place Saturday and Sunday around the Sugarloaf base area. Santa will be coming to town on Saturday, December 10. He’ll be accompanied by Amos & friends. We’ll spread the holiday cheer with warm treats, music on the beach, fireworks, and more!     Jordan 8 Opening:

    We’re just one week away from the Grand Opening of Jordan 8. Sunday River’s Jordan 8 lift, as part of the Sunday River 2030 plan, has a tentative opening date of December 17. They are choosing to raffle tickets to ride this to benefit the River Fund, and Maine Adaptive. Tickets will be sold for $5 dollars and won’t be included in the cost of a normal lift ticket. This raffle is to choose the first 8 people, or first chair, to ride the lift. For all the special details, click here.     Registration for Santa Sunday Is Now Open:

    Santa Sunday is this Sunday, December 11. Don’t miss the sea of Santa outfits out on the slopes of Broadway (green trail). After the parade down Broadway, Sunday River will validate your ticket to ski/ride for the rest of the day. Santas who participate in the 11AM photo shoot will also receive an additional lift ticket valid until Christmas Eve. What are you waiting for, click the link below.

    Have you visited the Saddleback Webcams? With three cameras scattered across the mountain, you’re guaranteed to get the best sunset. You could go back in time if you missed the best part. While you can catch some pretty amazing sunsets, you also are able to watch crews working. This past week, they strung the haul rope and the aXess gates are installed.     Saddleback opens in less than 24 hours! Will you be there for opening day? The base area was looking quite empty during the middle of the week, but with the guns cranking now, the base area will be full of snow in no time!     With Mother Nature giving the mountains the worst type of precipitation this past week, snowmakers across the state are scrambling to bring their mountains back to life. With this wacky weather, you might want to check the mountain report pages on your resort’s website before hitting the snow, so you’re always in the loop with current conditions and weather events. This weekend is looking like prime snowmaking weather with the lows in the teens. Crews can really pump out that white gold with those temps.

    The Rangeley Lakes Trails Center has officially been added to the Indy Pass roster. RLTC is on the Saddleback Access Road and is a perfect visit on those wind-hold days or if you’re looking for something else to do during the long vacation weeks.     Weather:

    This past week was pretty wild. Temps fluctuated from favorable to non-favorable within a few hours. This wacky weather pattern made the jobs of snowmakers almost impossible. On one hand, the wind has died down which will allow snowmakers to make snow on the trails, rather than in the woods, however, we are forecasting some non-solid precipitation on Saturday.     Competition Hill Construction:

    Crews are raping up on Sugarloaf’s newest lift, Competition Hill, A new Doppelmayr T-Bar in collaboration with Sugarloaf and CVA to create a world-class training environment. In the past few weeks, they have been working hard to make the lift spin this upcoming winter. They spliced the haul rope, This new lift, paired with fully automated snowmaking equipment will help give racers the confidence to go big! Sugarloaf hopes this new lift will help take pressure off main lifts on busy days. Watch the project take form by clicking the link below.

    Jordan 8:

    The new Jordan 8 construction is moving nicely. The crew at Sunday River and Doppelmayr only have a few more things before the lift will be taking skiers to the top of Jordan Peak. Those items include Aligning Towers, Pulling the haul rope, and putting chairs on the line. For the latest video update, click the link below.

    As we look at the way things are going with the forecast, we all are thinking winter will never be here. Thankfully, with the jet stream blowing cold arctic air in, we’ll be in for a treat next week. Also, your eyes aren’t deceiving you, they’re calling for a winter mix on Sunday. Although it won’t equate to anything, it’s still snow. Periods of rain and snow will be likely in the evening on Sunday Night.

    Join Sugarloaf and Carrabassett Valley Academy for the CRNEMBA Trail Work Day. Happening this October 29, help out by giving back to the trails. Bring the kids; trail work is a fun way for the family to get outside together and contribute to the community.

    THE WORK: We generally work from 9:00 AM till 2:00 PM raking, lopping, trimming, and occasionally tackling more significant maintenance projects. Our focus is on safety and fun. We’ll tailor assignments to your comfort level and we’re glad to have you for only part of the day if that’s all you have to give.

    ITEMS TO BRING: Water, sturdy gloves and footwear, safety glasses/protective eyewear, insect repellent, rain gear (just in case), lunch or snacks. We provide any specialized tools that may be needed but it’s helpful If you have hand tools that you can bring (such as leaf rakes, loppers, hand saws, hand shears). A cell phone is also a good idea so we can communicate on issues that may pop up.

This new lift, paired with fully automated snowmaking equipment will help give racers the confidence to go big! Sugarloaf hopes this new lift will help take pressure off main lifts on busy days.     The new Jordan 8 construction is moving nicely. The crew at Sunday River and Doppelmayr only have a few more things before the lift will be taking skiers to the top of Jordan Peak.     Augusta, MAINE – The Department of Agriculture, Conservation & Forestry’s (DACF) final Foliage Report for October 19 indicates past peak conditions throughout most of the state. Peak conditions are occurring along the immediate coast in zone one with high leaf drop (more than 70 percent).

    As we close the books on this spectacular fall foliage season, we’d like to give a shout-out and a huge thank you to all our leaf lovers and to everyone that shared their memorable fall foliage photos with us, added Ross.

    “For those of you who are adventurous and still want to catch a glimpse of the fall colors, a hike in and around the blueberry barrens in DownEast Maine is a must-see! If you have never seen the blueberry barrens ablaze with the fall colors, you will not be disappointed. For those of you who plan to visit Acadia National Park in Bar Harbor, you will be required to wear a mask in indoor spaces, due to an uptick in COVID-19 transmission levels,” said Gale Ross, fall foliage spokesperson.

    What a wet week! Most of Maine saw heavy rainfall throughout this past week. Some areas even saw flooding. If storm chasing is your thing, hit up Smalls Falls for some great late-season flow. Over the weekend, we have sunshine on tap with highs in the low 60’s. We’re gearing up for an awesome fall weekend in Maine.

    Augusta, MAINE – This week’s Fall Foliage Report from the Maine Department of Agriculture, Conservation and Forestry (DACF) reports high to peak conditions (70-100 percent) throughout most of Maine.

    As of October 12, 2022, Maine Forest Service (MFS) staff reported past peak color conditions in zones six and seven and moderate leaf drop in zones five, six, and seven. Color changes in zones one to four are at peak and rapidly approaching past peak. Coastal Maine, zones one and two, typically are last to reach their peak during mid-to-late October.

    “Despite the seemingly extended drought conditions across Maine this year, fall colors rebounded splendidly, and the state is ablaze with breathtaking hues throughout the state,” said Gale Ross, Maine’s fall foliage spokesperson. “I daresay this foliage season ranks among one of the best displays of colors for quite some time, evident by the wicked good photos submitted by Maine fall foliage enthusiasts!”

    While this week brought some warmth to us Mainers, today will be a little different. Expect lots of rain and high winds all day. Plus, with the rain, the spectacular fall foliage will mostly be gone. On a lighter note, this weekend’s forecasts are looking promising to get outside. We’re Mainers though, we don’t let rain and wind get in the way of our fun.

    Augusta, MAINE – The fourth 2022 Fall Foliage Report from the Maine Department of Agriculture, Conservation and Forestry (DACF) reports moderate to high color change (50-70 percent) throughout most of Maine. As of October 5, 2022, Maine Forest Rangers in northern and western Maine report peak color conditions (75-100 percent) with low leaf drop.

    Northern Maine (zones six and seven) is on track to reach peak conditions this week. Fall colors in all other areas of the state will occur from north to south through mid-October. Coastal Maine typically reaches peak color during mid-to-late October.

    “The peak conditions projected for this upcoming long holiday weekend set us up for one of the best weekends to plan your fall foliage leaf-peeping trip to your favorite destinations. The canopies across Maine are showing off their most vibrant colors! The leaves are still clinging to the trees with low leaf drop throughout Maine, which makes for perfect timing for our leaf enthusiasts,” said Gale Ross, Maine’s fall foliage spokesperson.

    Sugarloaf Uphill Climb:

    Registration is now open for the Uphill Climb which returns Sunday, October 9th. Important Info:

    • Starting at the SuperQuad, racers will run/hike/trudge about 2400 vertical feet to the summit. 
    • There will be two water stops along the course, offering water only.
    • This race will occur rain or shine, so please plan accordingly and bring plenty of extra layers for the summit.
    • No racers will be allowed on-course who have not registered, received a bib, or signed a liability release.

    Saddleback Oktoberfest:

    The second annual Oktoberfest at Saddleback is happening on October 8, 2022. With a free pass holder BBQ, beer, and other Oktoberfest activities, you don’t want to miss it! Plus, the Rangeley Quad will be spinning from 11-3pm for all those scenic views. Tickets are $10 and aren’t included in the festival ticket but are worth every penny! Passholders are free.     Sugarloaf Pump House:

    Throughout the off-season, crews at Sugarloaf have been busy building a booster pump house above Bullwinkle’s. During a press release, the mountain said “The new pump house, combined with the addition of 107 new high-efficiency HKD snowguns will increase the number of guns the resort can run simultaneously under optimal conditions from roughly 130 to nearly 230. This will allow the resort to cover and open more terrain earlier in the season.” All of this is working for a better western mountain experience with the upcoming West Mountain High-Speed Lift and Timberline replacement/upgrade in the following years.

    Scenic Lift Rides:

    Before summer started, we talked about various mountains offering lift rides throughout the off-season. Both Sugarloaf and Sunday River have picked it up again with rides up/down the mountain. The Chondola will be taking people from the base of the mountain to North Peak and the SuperQuad will be spinning to allow the use of the SuperQuad area of Sugarloaf. The Chondola is dog, kid, and grandparent-friendly, so you’ll want to pack up your whole family for this scenic adventure. Lift rides are available from 10AM-4PM on Saturdays and Sundays from early July to mid-October. You can buy tickets online in advance, but will need to pick up your tickets upon arrival. You can also purchase tickets on-site at the various lodges and base areas. Lift tickets will be issued until 3:30PM or until capacity is reached.
