Did you know Quill Hill has a very family friending hiking trail? It is a low incline gradual path that goes for about 3/4 of a mile from the top to the turn out below. We are working on updating signage to help people start the path from the lower point and walk to the top lookout. Incline is gradual and perfect for young families just starting to hike or anyone up for a low key walk. There is even a look out spot on the way up with chairs and a table! Thanks To Adrien for this true gift – I think it is even wheelchair accessible!!

    Hiking Saddleback:

We all love a good leg burner day on the slopes. You can get the same great workout at Saddleback in the summertime. We welcome hikers! Here are some tips and rules to please keep in mind.

    • There are two main hiking routes up Saddleback Mountain’s ski resort side. The road by way of Lower Green Weaver and the most direct route, Grey Ghost. It’s 1.8 miles from the lodge to the summit (via Grey Ghost + Tri Color) and another 1.7 miles to the Horn from the summit.
    • Saddleback is Maine’s 3rd largest alpine zone, the ecosystem above tree line is extremely fragile, please always travel on durable surfaces such as rock or bare dirt.
    • Plan ahead and prepare, pack plenty of water and extra layers, at over 4,000 feet the weather on the mountain will be much different than in town Rangeley. It can be cold and windy on the summit even in mid-summer.
    • We all love our dogs, but please be considerate of other visitors, and the fragile ecosystem and keep dogs on leash above tree line.
    • There is active construction going on during the summer and early fall at Saddleback. Please be aware of construction vehicle traffic and allow the vehicles to pass.

If you get hungry, the Fat Tire Mountain Bar has recently expanded its hours! Check it out along with the Hiking Information Page at the link below

This Sunday is Father’s Day and Saddleback is ready to make it special. A timeline of events includes Saddleback’s Brunch served 9:00am – 2:00pm. The Joe Montimurro Band plays 4:00pm – 7:00pm outside on the deck. And there is a special Father’s Day Menu featuring Wing & Whiskey pairings from 4:00pm – 8:00pm. Parking

Yes, you read that right! If you visited Saddleback on one of those famous pow days, you may have noticed the parking – or lack of. This problem forced people to park almost a mile down the access road. This paired with the covid restrictions with the lodge, which means people had to travel about two miles to their “mobile lodge” or “lodge on wheels”. Thankfully, the folks at Saddleback say that they are actively designing their parking lots. You might also remember when talks of a solar farm coming to saddleback were all over the press. Well, the crew is also working on that project which will make the mountain more eco-friendly and provide clean energy to the mountain and most condos. See the photo below to check out the construction of the solar farm project.

    Photography:

As lupin season is here and will be in the mountains shorty, this is the perfect time to break out those cameras and head over to a spot you’ve been thinking about. My personal recommendations are: A water photo, anything with the sun, either coming up or going down, or my favorite, the ski hill. If you need inspiration, just do a quick Google search of the area you are in and it will show many popular locations. Or, click over to images and look at what others have shared. However, we are still in blackfly season, or what everyone else calls it, spring which makes bug spray the name of the game! I would suggest pants and long sleeve shirts so you can protect yourself from ticks as well.
