Saddleback:
Saddleback has planned for opening day to be November 23, however, with snowmaking shipping delays and mother nature not on our side, they have moved their tentative opening day to Saturday, November 27. You can still go to the mountain to get your season pass, rentals, and the pub. Hours and other information is below.

November:
Woah! Can you believe it’s November 5th? November means one thing for us skiers: SNOW! This November is expected to be a snowy one! Let’s get those skis dusted off and the snow dances going!
Saddleback:
Last weekend, I took a trip up to Saddleback to check out the progress. Although there weren’t any machines running at the time, you could tell they are still hard at work getting the mountain ready for us skiers. After all, this is crunch season for them. The photos below show the activity around the busy resort ranging from the new Cupstuptic T-Bar to the A-Frames and everything in between.
Photo: Cupsuptic T-Bar (10/30/21) Saddleback Crew Hung Tees on 11/2

Moving Carpet:
Saddleback’s new Moving Carpet has a name! If you have been looking around our website you probably know it already: Mollychunkamunk. At first, I thought it was strange and the name didn’t feel right, however, Andy Shepard made a statement saying Mollychunkamunk was the former name of the Richardson Lake. After a while, the name grew on me and I think it will be a fun name for the kids to say. For the first season, Saddleback has said they will be running this lift as needed and it will be run by the Ski School. Basically saying it won’t be running all the time, only peak times or when they feel they need to run it.
Opening Dates:
All dates should be taken with a grain of salt. Below are the planned opening dates for the big mountains.
Saddleback: November 23
Sugarloaf: Before Thanksgiving
Sunday River: Before Thanksgiving
We’ll update you week by week via our emails, and through our Twitter.
Hats:
That’s right Mainely Skiers! Our hats are now in. Head over to the merchandise page and get yours today! Now 10% off through Sunday!
Killington has officially opened for the 2021/22 ski season, first in New England. Sugarloaf and Sunday River have kickstarted their fall season by getting those guns fired up! We should be skiing shortly!
Weather:
As I watch the countdown tick down to zero, I can’t help but notice our temps for this weekend. Let’s hope these temps keep dropping! Pssst, live countdown on the Mountain Lift Status page, linked below 😉

How about those “Arctic blasts” we had at the beginning of the week? Most places saw frost but some saw their first snowfall of the winter season. Although the temps don’t look promising for this weekend, fingers crossed one of the three big resorts will crank up their snowguns soon!

The Jordan 8 also introduces the exciting concept of what will become the Western Reserve, which includes Jordan Bowl, Oz, and future terrain expansion beyond.
This advanced high-speed eight-person lift is built by Doppelmayr, the leading lift manufacturing company. This lift will be similar to that of the Ramcharger 8 at Big Sky, Montana, and the new Kancamagus 8 being built at Loon, New Hampshire. Big Changes:
There have been some big and exciting changes happening to our website. First, our website will now be mainelyskiing.com rather than the wordpress website. Everything will remain the same however feel this will be easier for everyone and be better for our site. Second, we are working on new designs of merch for the upcoming ski season. If you have seen anything cool or want to suggest something, a contact form will be below.
Can you believe it’s October? We can’t either! This means the ski areas are in their final push for all summer work. However, that doesn’t mean they are closing until the snow flies. Below, you will find all the fun things happening around the various resorts.
Happy Fall:
Happy Fall! You know what that means Mainely Skiers, winter is just around the corner. Let’s all take fall to make sure you’re all set with your winter gear as fall is home to many ski swaps/sales and purchase your season pass for next year if you haven’t already. Below you can find links to the top ski mountains in Maine to purchase your pass. Below, you will also find a fellow Saddlebacker’s ski swap guide by clicking his website below.
We all love a good leg burner day on the slopes. You can get the same great workout at Saddleback in the fall too! We welcome hikers! Here are some tips and rules to please keep in mind.
There are two main hiking routes up Saddleback Mountain’s ski resort side. The road by way of Lower Green Weaver and the most direct route, Grey Ghost. It’s 1.8 miles from the lodge to the summit (via Grey Ghost + Tri Color) and another 1.7 miles to the Horn from the summit.
Saddleback is Maine’s 3rd largest alpine zone, the ecosystem above tree line is extremely fragile, please always travel on durable surfaces such as rock or bare dirt. Please make sure you are only stepping on the marked trail.
Plan ahead and prepare, pack plenty of water and extra layers, at over 4,000 feet the weather on the mountain will be much different than in town Rangeley. It can be cold and windy on the summit even in mid-summer.
We all love our dogs, but please be considerate of other visitors, and the fragile ecosystem and keep dogs on leash above tree line.
There is active construction going on during the summer and early fall at Saddleback. Please be aware of construction vehicle traffic and allow the vehicles to pass.
If you get hungry, the Fat Tire Mountain Bar has recently expanded its hours! Check it out along with the Hiking Information Page at the link below

As crazy as this might sound, Summer is almost over. But, just because I said that doesn’t mean we won’t continue to have hot days. Staying cool on those record setting days is easier said than done. Stay cool by taking a swim at Smalls Falls. With plenty of parking and restrooms available, this is the perfect family-friendly activity. If you haven’t been here already, you should! In fact, you’ve probably passed it on the way to Rangeley. Even if swimming isn’t your thing, you will still have a great time if you hit it during the peak for fall leaves! This place sure is special!

Sunday River’s Tough Mountain Challenge returns bigger and better. Tough Mountain Challenge has been the most popular and most fun adventure obstacle race in New England since 2010. Set in the mountains of Maine, Tough Mountain delivers mud, sweat, and beer to 3,600 competitors every year. We’re gearing up for our 2021 event on July 24. Are you tough enough?
Maine is home to 14, 4,000-foot peaks, Saddleback Mountain is lucky enough to be nestled right in the heart of the county containing 10 of these peaks. Come meet up with other like-minded hikers who wish to complete these 4,000-foot peaks. Let the Saddleback Adventure guides do all the trip planning and organizing to get you to the top of one or more of these high peaks to enjoy the sense of accomplishment and beauty found in the mountains. These hikes are very challenging and arduous; hikers will need to be competent with good physical stamina. This Sunday’s hike: Mt. Abraham.
Have you seen Saddleback’s store in downtown Rangeley? Stop by 10:00am – 5:00pm every day! This saves you a drive up to the mountain and you might even find some limited edition products… but, you didn’t hear that from me!
